Inside the workshop: The Things We Do For Love
Share
At Mountain Girl Soap we have a soft spot for the Pacific Northwest environment. We believe that we are the caretakers of this planet. Here are a few things we do everyday to reduce our impact on the earth.
- Buy local or regional. Everyday we vote with our dollars to support local businesses. Buying our raw materials locally helps minimize air pollution since the items don’t have to travel a long distance. Yes, ma’am, our dollars have power.
- Go electronic. We reduce our impact by forgoing the paper. We opt for electronic bill pay, and paperless bills and bank statements where available. We don’t send paper receipts in our shipments; in this day and age of technology customers receive electronic order confirmations, shipping notifications and the like. Skip the paper catalogs and view products online. Easy-peasy, fresh and squeezy.
- Home compost. Our food scraps are thrown into a compost bin, processed naturally by red worms and in a few weeks we have a rich soil amendment that we use in our garden. We make regular deposits to our compost bin; banana peels, melon rinds, eggshells, coffee grounds and the like. The earth will love you for this and return the favor in heaps of healthy plants.
- Reuse. Many everyday items can be washed or sterilized and used again. Examples of what we reuse in our workshop are plastic 5 gallon buckets, glass bottles and jars, cardboard boxes and packing material and my favorite ~ reusable shopping bags! And it is so hip to reuse your own coffee cup at Starbucks. Just sayin'.
