Earth Day 2021- How to Celebrate From Home

Many in-person Earth Day events have been canceled again this year due to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean we can’t show the Earth some love. Earth Day is always on April 22nd, and this year is the 51st Earth Day. The theme is “Restore Our Earth”.

Check out these 3 things you can do.

#1. PLANT

Plant a garden or expand your garden. Digging in the soil with your hands is good physical activity as well as therapy for your mind. Read about the Art of Grounding (Earthing).
Plant native plants are suited to the local environment, save water and enhance wildlife habitats. Select plants that attract bees and hummingbirds. Here are some of my favorite places to find plants and seeds. Turtle Bay’s McConnell Arboretum + Botanical Gardens Nursery, California Native Plant Society, Theodore Payne Foundation, Tree of Life Nursery, Strictly Medicinal Seeds, and California Botanic Garden.

#2. BUY LOCAL

Find a local food provider. There are many benefits to buying food grown locally.
    • You help create local jobs, boost the local economy, and create community.
    • Your food looks and tastes better because it’s fresher – it hasn’t traveled miles and weeks to get to your table. It’s also better for you – food that has a long time getting to your table has lost flavor and freshness along its journey.
    • Less transit time saves fuel and generates fewer greenhouse gases, and results in less spoiled food from the shorter distribution chain.
    • It’s good for the land, preserve open spaces, and encourages diversification of local agriculture.

#3. DRIVE LESS

Drive fewer miles. Driving has a huge impact on the environment. Did you know the world experienced a drop in carbon dioxide emissions due to the decrease in travel? Check this article by Newsweek: COVID-19 Pandemic Could Lead to Fall in C02 Not Seen Since the End of WWII. Can you find a way to continue driving less? Combine errands and do them all at once. Can you telecommute to work?
Take more walks. Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t go outside and enjoy nature. Take a walk around your neighborhood, breathe in some fresh air, take along a trash bag and gloves and clean up debris along the road. Remember to recycle the plastic you find.

Happy Earth Day,
