How To Use Facial Serums

WHAT IS A SERUM?

Simply stated, a serum is a nutrition supplement for the skin. They are typically lightweight in texture and have a small molecular structure to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients to the skin. Serums deposit powerful nutrients into deeper layers of skin to enhance your skin's health.

You can find both water-based and oil-based serums on the market. A water or gel-based serum will bring added hydration and water-soluble vitamins to the skin. Oil-based serums supplies antioxidants or anti-inflammatory nutrients, delivers oil-soluble vitamins, and helps the skin retain water. The serums offered in my shop are oil-based.

HOW TO USE A SERUM

So, how do you incorporate a serum into your facial routine? A good rule of thumb to remember is that water comes first, and then you lock in that hydration with oil. The #1 important rule to remember is that facial oils should always come last to seal in the moisture you’ve provided. Remember: oils do not hydrate (add water) – what they do is soften, nourish, and provide vitamins and antioxidants.

  1. Start with a clean face by washing with your favorite cleanser. Try my Foaming Facial Cleanser or Facial Soap.
  2. Partially dry your face by gentling patting it with a towel, leaving it still wet. Alternatively, you can spritz with some facial toner or hydrosol.
  3. Pump a small amount of serum into your wet palm, gently rub your hands together to create a micro-emulsion and warm the serum. Apply to your face and neck, massaging into the skin with a circular motion.
  4. Allow the serum to soak in and penetrate the skin. No need to follow with a moisturizer. The serum locks in the moisture from your water/toner/hydrosol.

Got dry skin? Try colloidal oatmeal! Oatmeal is a classic ingredient used to soothe the skin and relieve itchy and dry skin conditions.
