Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is a California Native Plant and one of the keystone species of the coastal sage scrub plant community. The flowers are an important food source for butterflies and hummingbirds, as are the seeds for quail and other birds.
Black Sage has been thriving in my Northern California garden since 2017 when I purchased some from a native plant sale. I harvested and distilled the flower heads and leaves to obtain this beautiful and powerful essential oil.
Commonly used to promote sleep and vivid dreams, Black Sage is similar in properties and benefits as California Mugwort (also sometimes called Black Sage) except without the thujone content. It has a powerful and pungent characteristic sage aroma and deep calming aromatic properties.
My favorite use is as a roll-on before bedtime to promote sleep, diluted in a carrier oil and combined with lavender and cedarwood, sometimes I add a drop of mugwort to the blend.
See the GCMS analysis for this batch.
