Uniquely PNW – Farmer’s Markets

Uniquely PNW – Farmer’s Markets

If your footwear of choice is a pair of rubber boots, you never use an umbrella when it rains, have a cup of coffee permanently attached to the palm of your hand, and are passionate about farmer’s markets you might be a Pacific Northwesterner.

I adore the sights, sounds, and smells of the local farmers market and visiting them is one of my favorite things to do. Taking the top spot is the ambiance of Pike Place. With it’s characteristically unique Pacific Northwest style it’s a literal feast for the senses. There’s no denying the well-established popularity of Pike Place as a cultural icon. And the North West overflows with an abundance of regional markets.

At any given location you can find fresh produce to pasture-raised meats, wild-caught seafood, wine, beer, dairy, bread and pastries, and plenty of hot and made-to-order food when you get hungry. You can find artisan cheese, cider, espresso, and freshly roasted coffee. Local artists also showcase their handiwork, featuring one-of-a-kind jewelry, knitted clothing, and handcrafted skin care products - including soaps, herbal salves, and lotions. To round out the experience is often live music. I can spend hours there!

Among some of my personal favorites are both some little and well-known places like the North Coast Grower’s Association at the Arcata Plaza in Arcata, CA; Rogue Valley Grower’s Market in Ashland, OR on Tuesdays, Puyallup Farmer’s Market in Puyallup, WA, Pure Kona Green Market in Capitan Cook, HI. From small charming and quaint markets to large year-round markets or those housed in pavilions, it’s all so good.

What’s on your list of favorite farmer’s markets?
