I’m a mountain girl at heart, always have been. Don’t get me wrong, I totally dig the beach and can spend a day playing in the waves. But when I stand at the foot of a colossal mountain, nothing takes my breath away like it’s majesty. I love the excitement of the trail, the breathtaking surprises around every bend, and the reward of a mind-blowing view at the top. It makes me feel giddy like a kid when everything was new. “I’ve never seen THIS view before!”, “I’ve never seen THESE trees before!”, “Look at that cliff!”, “Smell those flowers!” It inspires feelings of gratefulness to my creator who gave me everything I need, and delights me with things big and small.
Kauai offers plenty of trails to fulfill my yearning for the mountains. One of my favorites is Nounou Mountain (Sleeping Giant). This October, I hiked it via the west trail, which I highly recommend. It's a 1.5 miles out and back hike through stands of Cook and Norfolk pine. A couple of sections of the climb were on extremely narrow paths, and at times nearly straight up a rocky face. Use caution if it's raining when you go. There was a super cool walk-through cave and at the summit a 360 degree view. Ah, my happy place...
Looking back at the trail leading up reminds me to honor my past experiences. Life at times is difficult and takes unexpected twists and turns. The road has been rocky and slippery as I've navigated my way. I've made plenty of wrong turns but in hindsight those actions are what got me to where I am today and have made me all the wiser. I respect my journey.
In the end, the perspective of the mountain encompassed the beach, too. The best of both worlds. After all of that hiking I think I've earned a relaxing soak in the tub.
